Welcome to my Substack Era. Starting now, I’ll be sharing me personal musings on K-12 education here. It’ll replace my ole’ blog, though I’ll migrate my greatest hits over to Substack, with updates where it makes sense.
Then, there is this other idea…
By popular demand, I’m toying with creating a regular (weekly-ish?) digest of the key conversations in the literacy zeitgeist. Over in the Bird App Formerly Known As Twitter, I strive to amplify the key journalism, breaking news, and essential educator voices in our space. My Twitter account has been a town crier for literacy news, plus other must-reads.
The landscape has shifted. X is no longer an optimal space for sharing or finding those literacy conversations. Some people have migrated, and the algorithm seems to preference the political over pedagogical.
For years, folks have suggest that literacy and K-12 advocacy deserve their own ‘Marshall Memo,’ focused on literacy and related discourse – and that this was my wheelhouse. Lately, the requests to create a literacy equivalent have come fast and furious. Many people feel like they are missing key developments, because they can’t – or don’t care to – check in on all the platforms.
Does this sound like you? Do you want a regular roundup of the key reading – and key posts/chatter – related to literacy and learning science? Perhaps with a sprinkling of the Big News in K-12? If so, I’d like to hear from you.
First, you can comment on this post. I’m interested in your thoughts on the concept, what should be in such a regular digest, the evolving landscape, etc.
If you’d like to subscribe to such a digest email, you can pledge this Substack as a paid subscriber. I set the pledge amount as low as Substack would let me (paging Sunstack: I wish I could set it lower!). I don’t have payments turned on, so you won’t be charged now (or maybe ever). But your pledges (and comments) will help me gauge the interest in the idea. If there is enough interest, I’ll create that digest as a subscriber-only publication (and you’ll be charged then). Or better yet, maybe there are funders who want to support this concept as a free publication.
If not, we’ll always have my free posts. I plan to publish my usual musings freely, as I have in the past.
Thank you for everything you are doing to elevate the important literacy and advocacy conversations in this messy, transitional moment.
Yours truly,
Karen from Twitter
